Biography:

Lewis' career started in 1993 when he was 8 years old and by the age of 10 Lewis had won his first British Kart championship. A further four British Kart championships followed in 1996 and 1997. At the age of 13, Lewis his talent was spotted and subsequently signed to the McLaren and Mercedes-Benz Young Driver Support Programme by McLaren Group Chairman and CEO Ron Dennis. The programme, established by McLaren Group Chairman and CEO Ron Dennis and Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Norbert Haug, provided Lewis with a long-term contract guaranteeing financial and technical support to help with his future motorsport career and included a future option for the entry into Formula 1.

Lewis remains the only teenager ever to be signed by a Formula 1 team at such an early age.

Throughout 1998 to 2000 and with financial backing secured by McLaren, Lewis won European and World Karting titles and was crowned Karting World No. 1 in 2000 at the age of 15. Seven years later, Lewis remains the youngest ever World Karting No. 1.

Following a successful Karting career, Lewis graduated to single-seater racing in 2002 in the Formula Renault single seater category and finished 3rd in his first full season of car racing. A second season of Formula Renault followed in 2003 with Lewis dominating the series and setting a championship record with 10 wins, 9 fastest laps and 11 pole positions and winning the championship two rounds before the final race.

In 2004, Lewis raced in the highly competitive Formula 3 Euroseries championship on the same event card as the Germany DTM touring car championship. Racing for Manor Motorsport, a rookie team in Europe and Lewis in his first year of Formula 3, Lewis finished 5th having taken a win at the Norisring plus four further podiums.

In 2005, Lewis won the Formula 3 Euroseries championship racing for the dominant ASM team. In 2006, he joined ART Grand Prix team in the GP2 Series as a replacement for the previous year's champion Nico Rosberg. His performance in the GP2 Series was impressive. At the European GP2 event he won both races, becoming only the second driver (after Nico Rosberg) to do so in the series history and won at Monaco from pole. At Silverstone Lewis went one better and scored his second double race win becoming the only driver in GP2 history to do so. Lewis was the 2006 GP2 champion and is currently preparing for his second year as a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver.
